چکیده
We compare Sir Karl Popper’s ideas concerning the falsifiability of a theory with similar notions from VC-theory. Having located some divergences, we discuss how best to view Popper’s work from the perspective of statistical learning theory.

Opinoin Falsifiability of Theories in the Biological Sciences
Biology is generally accepted as a mainstream scientific discipline. However, philosophers of science have questioned the scientific method applied in biological sciences, specifically in evolutionary biology, ever since Karl Popper formulated his principle of falsification. Thus the only major theory in biology, Darwin’s theory of evolution, was referred to by Popper as a metaphysical programm...

The reason that Professor Zeide (Zeide, 2010) objects so strongly with Popper’s falsification view of scientific theory (Popper, K.S., 1968) is because Professor Popper and Professor Zeide are defining, interpreting and using the terms “induction”, “verification” and “falsification” in different ways: they have different ontologies and metadata. There are many possible types of “induction” (log...

Falsification of a universal statement such as “all swans are white” requires verification of a particular statement such as “this swan is black.” Verification is an inductive process because it consists in examining one feature of the bird after another. The color of the feathers is not sufficient (the bird with black feathers could be a crow); many other features have to be compared. The iden...

Karl Popper, though not trained as a physicist and embarrassed early in his career by a physics error pointed out by Einstein and Bohr, ultimately made substantial contributions to the interpretation of quantum mechanics. As was often the case, Popper initially formulated his position by criticizing the views of others—in this case Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg. Underlying Popper’s criticism...
